Project Management Solutions Group ... We Care About You!

Jackson County Chamber Spotlight: Project Management Solutions Group offers full-service consulting

January 03, 2016

Interview with Mike Ward, president and CEO of Project Management Solutions Group

Why did you go into business?

I went into business because it was suggested that there was greater benefit in me being a business owner than an employee. I was interviewing for positions with various companies, and I was informed more than once that I was overqualified for the positions for which I was applying. As a service-disabled veteran, I was encouraged to begin a company, and it became one of the best decisions of my life. Project Management Solutions Group (PMSG) is now a certified minority business enterprise, and we are also certified as a service disabled veteran-owned business.

ABOVE AND BEYOND

Michael Ward is president and chief executive officer of Project Management Solutions Group an enterprise project management firm that specializes in IT, telecommunications, business operations, construction, healthcare and real estate.

Ward grew up in St Louis, Missouri and attended Charles H. Sumner High School—the oldest African American high school in St. Louis. During his time there, he became a swimmer. Ward cites being an African American swimmer, a rarity in his time, as helping him to become who he is today.

“Coming from where I’m from and being able to do something that is above and beyond yourself, gave way for more opportunities and a different mindset,” says Ward.

In 2005, when Mike Ward’s brother called to tell him that his mother was passing away, he immediately got on a plane from Phoenix to St. Louis. “My mother ended up holding on for a few more months and we had the opportunity to talk out some issues, so I was at peace when she left,” says Ward. “I had been here so long that anything I had going on in Phoenix was over.”

So Ward decided to build a career in St. Louis. “My experience was usually as good as or better than the person interviewing me,” he says. “One person in particular said, ‘I can’t hire you, but I can do business with you. You’re a minority and a vet. Go to the Secretary of the State Office and get an LLC. Then come back and we’ll do business.’ So out of frustration, that’s what I did.”

business to the Magnolia State. His company takes on government and private sector project management assignments, and he’s worked with the Veterans Administration, the Corps of Engineers, Homeland Security, and other agencies.
In a recent conversation, he discussed why he likes Mississippi as a business location. “I’d say Mississippi is ideally positioned for doing business throughout the South,” he said . “I see a lot of advantages in doing business here – people have a great work ethic, the state is growing, and there are lots of opportunities .” Ward is presently looking to open an office in Mississippi and expects to be working on projects in the state in the next year or so. “I love my work,” he said . ” Being able to work in strategic planning, creating a vision, and then make things work as they’re supposed to – that’s what I thrive on.”
